Two Powerful Car Bombs Kill Scores in Baghdad

October 25, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Twin bomb blasts near central Baghdad’s Green Zone kill at least 90 people and wounded more than 400 others, in the bloodiest attack in months. The blasts went off less than a minute apart on Sunday morning. One of the bombs exploded outside Baghdad’s governorate building and the second one outside the Justice Ministry, about 500 meters (1,600 feet) away. There were so many wounded that even civilian cars were pressed into service to bring the casualties to area hospitals. A Shiite member of the Baghdad Provincial Council, Mohammed al-Rubaiey, said at least 25 members of the provincial council staff were killed in the blasts and that the wounded were still being taken to the hospital. The blasts, rivaled coordinated blasts against two government ministries in August that killed more than 100 people. The explosions come as Iraq is preparing for elections scheduled this January, and many Iraqi officials have warned that violence by insurgents intent on making the country appear unstable could rise.
