Hillary Clinton sends confusing message in attempting to jump-start MidEast peace talks

November 1, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has rejected the Palestinian Authority  demand that Israel freeze all settlement activity as a precondition to negotiations.   Clinton  who arrived in Israel on Saturday evening for a brief visit as part of a regional trip, called Netanyahu’s concessions on the West Bank “unprecedented,” and urged Palestine and Israel to restart peace talks on Saturday.

“What the prime minister has offered… a restraint on the policy of settlements, which he has just described, no new starts, for example, is unprecedented in the context of prior to negotiations,” Clinton said, in advance of her meeting with the prime minister.
The Obama administration has previously backed the Palestinians, also calling on Israel to entirely stop settlement on the West Bank, as a precondition for peace talks.

“I want to see both sides as soon as possible begin in negotiations,” the secretary of State said in a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Both President Obama and I are committed to a comprehensive peace agreement.”

Palestine rebuffed the request for talks, pointing to the West Bank and Israel’s recent suppression of disturbances at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.  Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip J. Crowley later clarified to The Jerusalem Post that the United States is still demanding that Israel freeze all settlement activity, but that it should not be a precondition for talks between Israelis and Palestinians.
