Somali pirates attack US cargo ship Maersk Alabama again

November 18, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Remember the plight of the cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama, which came under attack by Somali pirates?  The brave captain Richard Phillips was held hostage for five days in April, after he offered himself to the pirates in a bid to save his 19-member crew from harm. Phillips was rescued when American naval snipers opened fire on the pirates holding him in a lifeboat, killing three outright.

Somali pirates for the second time in seven months attacked the Maersk Alabama but this time they were more prepared. The E.U. Naval Force said the pirates fired automatic weapons at the ship, but that guards on board returned fire to thwart Tuesday’s attack.

The attack came a day after pirates released a Spanish fishing boat and its crew after holding it for six weeks.  The E.U. Naval Force said the second attack was pure chance.

“It’s not the first vessel to have been attacked twice, and it’s a chance that every single ship takes as it passes through the area,” Cmdr. John Harbour said. “At least this time they had a vessel protection detachment on board who were able to repel the attack.”
