Ferry Sinks In Indonesia, At Least 29 Dead, 240 Rescued

November 22, 2009

Indonesia (ChattahBox) – Turbulent waters rank a ferry this weekend in what is being called a “classic case” of ignored safety regulations.

The ferry, which had a capacity maximum of 273, is believed to have been carrying many more, though only 217 were reported on rosters.

This is already significantly more than the 269 accounted for, 29 of whom were dead when rescuers found them.

The main problem at this point is not knowing how many were actually on the ferry. There could have been dozens more, but there are no records to show officials who they are looking for.

Rescuers have left the scene, and will commence seraching again on Monday at daybreak.

Turbulent waters are being blamed for the incident, as well as unstable craft building, and too many passengers on board.
