Iran Censured Over Nuclear Program by U.N. Watchdog

November 27, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The endlessly patient International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has finally passed a resolution condemning Iran for developing a uranium enrichment site in secret. The censure resolution, the first against Iran in nearly four years, was passed with rare Russian and Chinese backing, by a 25-3 margin with six abstentions. Could this vote be a sign that Moscow and Beijing would support the expansion of sanctions before the end of the year, that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has termed “crippling” in nature, remains to be seen.
Western fears about the country’s nuclear ambitions, heitened after it emerged in September that Iran has a second uranium enrichment facility near the town of Qom. The UN nuclear watchdog’s governing body also demanded that Iran freeze the project immediately.  The call for censure came after the head of the International Atomic energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, declared in unusually blunt language on Thursday that Iran had stonewalled investigators and that his efforts to reveal the truth had “effectively reached a dead end.”
