Iran Claims to Accept UN Deal to Swap Uranium for Fuel – But With Conditions

December 12, 2009

(ChattahBox) – While the Obama administration signaled its intention Friday to push for new significant sanctions against Iran now, the Islamic Republic has apparently decided it better change it’s tune and claims it is ready to abide by the last nuclear proposal.  Iran has about 3,300 pounds (1,500 kilograms) of low-enriched uranium and needs to refine to 20 percent to operate a research reactor that produces medical isotopes, well below the 90 percent and above, needed to make nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency proposed in October that Iran ship its uranium out of the country to be further refined by France and Russia and turned into fuel rods, which cannot be turned into weapons. As a year-end deadline set by Western countries for Iranian cooperation is about to expire, foreign minister said Saturday,  Iran is willing to exchange the bulk of its stockpile of enriched uranium for nuclear fuel rods — as proposed by the U.N. — but according to its own mechanisms and timetable, which probably isn’t going to fly.  Speaking to reporters at a regional security conference in Bahrain, Manochehr Mottaki said via the NY Times:

”We accepted the proposal in principle,” he said through a translator. ”We suggested in the first phase we give you 400 kilograms of 3.5 percent enriched uranium and you give us the equivalent in 20 percent uranium.”

Mottaki suggested that the exchanges of uranium for fuel take place on Iran’s Kish island in the Persian Gulf, which might also be an issue.

After running war games a couple weeks ago and blustering it was going to build 10 new nuclear plants, it’s almost humorous to see Tehran, going back to the ‘dragging it’s heels strategy’ and ‘almost’ agreeing but always setting new conditions.  In the end they probably will fully agree to stop the almost certain new sanctions coming their way, but for how long?
