Volcano Eruption ‘Imminent’ In Philippines

December 15, 2009

Philippines (ChattahBox) – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismologyhas raised the alert level to 3 Monday, and today have begun evacuations as the Mayon volcano shows signs of a coming eruption.

Residents have fled the province, with more than 45 towns and cities being ordered to comply with mandatory evacuation, set by Provincial Gov. Joey Salceda.

The eruption is expected to be a full scale, with magma and ash. It is the first major eruption since 1993, and has raised a number of concerns over the safety of the fleeing residents, and damage to the surrounding area.

Salceda has canceled his planned trip to the Copenhagen climate summit, and has instead begun meeting with various agencies to set up an emergency plan to deal with the eruption, which is expect to occur within the next few days, to few weeks.
