Theft Of Auschwitz Sign Not The Work Of Neo-Nazi Groups

December 21, 2009

Poland (ChattahBox) – After fears that the theft of the sign over Auschwitz was a political move, authorities are saying that the men arrested had no ties to a Neo-Nazi group.

The five men, between the ages of 29 and 36, cut the “Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Sets You Free)” sign into several pieces and hid it in different parts of the Polish wilderness.

It isn’t clear exactly what it is they were hoping to do with it, though an anonymous source speaking to a Polish radio station, Polish RMF, said that it was possibly a “mad collector.”

“No neo-fascist organisation appears to have been involved, but it was a very well planned operation which bears the hallmarks of a commissioned theft.”
