Nigeria Protests After Senator Takes 13-Year-Old Girl As Bride

April 28, 2010

Nigeria (ChattahBox) – Nigerian women’s rights groups have spoken out against a senator that was has been found to have married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl.

The disgusting instance of taking a child bride has caused massive protests against 49-year-old Ahmad Sani Yerima.

“What we are concerned with is that our minors, the girl child, should be allowed to mature, before going into marriage,” President of the Women’s Medical Association, Mma Wokocha, said.

“This very evil act should not be seen to be perpetrated by one of our distinguished legislators … that is what we are saying.”

The senate is investigating the claim, and many are calling for a jail sentence and fine, as well as the immediate repeal of the marriage.

Reports of the marriage say that this is the second marriage for the senator of a minor, with a 15-year-old having become his wife in 2006. There is no word of where this girl, or the other, might currently  be.

It is believed that Sani paid $100,000 as a dowry to the parents.
