U.S Commander Says Iraqi Troops Ready to Take Over Full Operations

August 8, 2010

Iraq (ChattahBox) – The U.S. commander over forces in Iraq has said that the military in the region is now ready to begin taking complete control over all military operations.

Over the last several years training has been slow going. But new, more intense training over the last year and a half have been said to have generated amazing results.

“We do believe they are ready to assume full operations in Iraq,” RAW quoted Gen. Ray Odierno as saying.

“This is something we’ve been working for a very long time with the Iraqi security forces. For the last 20 months, we’ve been slowly and deliberately turning over more and more responsibility to them and they have stepped up. They continue to do broad scope operations across all of Iraq.”

While there is no doubt that the Iraqi army is ready to take broad control over operations, the issue of withdrawing U.S. troops is generating mixed responses.

Earlier this week, Saddam Hussein’s deputy Tariq Aziz begged President Obama not to “leave Iraq to the wolves”, and to accept that the United States should stay behind to fix the mistakes made during the invasion.
